Mass Flowmeter | 10 Key Installation Points

1) Flowmeter Installation Location

The installation location is crucial. Generally, horizontal installation is recommended. In particular, flowmeters used for high-pressure applications (bypass instruments > 10 bar) must be installed horizontally. Avoid installing near mechanical vibrations and heat sources.

2) Avoiding Pipe Disturbances

Avoid sudden bends at the inlet and outlet of the flowmeter or any objects in the flow path that may cause turbulence, especially under high-flow conditions. It is recommended that the distance between the pipe bend and the inlet should be no less than 10 times the pipe diameter.

3) Nameplate

Please read the instrument nameplate before installation to check the electrical connections, flow range, medium to be measured, inlet and outlet pressures, operating temperature, ATEX category (if applicable), as well as input and output signals. Also, check whether the sealing material is compatible with the process gas.

4) Electrostatic Discharge

The flowmeter contains electronic components sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) - the sudden flow of current between two charged objects caused by contact. Contact with charged persons or objects may endanger these components or even cause them to fail.

5) Pressurization

Do not pressurize the system before powering it on. When pressurizing the system, gradually increase the pressure to avoid pressure surges.

6) Pipeline Inspection

Ensure the system is clean (before installing the instrument). To ensure cleanliness, install a filter to ensure an oil- and water-free gas path. It is recommended to install a filter upstream of the flowmeter/controller, and a filter or check valve downstream in case of backflow.

7) In-line Installation

Install the mass flowmeter/controller in the pipeline, following the instructions to tighten the connections.

8) Pipe Diameter

Avoid using small-diameter pipes under high-flow conditions, as inlet jetting can affect accuracy and may cause excessive pressure drop in the pipes and connections. Selecting an appropriate pipe diameter is also important to minimize the impact of turbulence.

9) Leakage Test

Before pressurizing the system, be sure to check for leaks, especially when dealing with toxic, explosive, or other hazardous fluids.

10) Powering On

Power on the flowmeter/controller and allow it to preheat for approximately 30 minutes until it stabilizes. This can be done with or without fluid pressurization.
